The National University of Singapore (NUS) was established in August 1980 with the merger of the University of Singapore and Nanyang University. Its origins, however can be traced to the King Edward VII College of Medicine (opened in 1905) and Raffles College (opened in 1929). Today, NUS has eight faculties of study and 16 reserach institutes serving a student population of more than 20,000. NUS is now one of the leading centres of higher learning and research in the Asia Pacific region.
