The Department of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine was established in 1948. It is a major research and training institution in the region for community medicine/public health. It has an established international track record on research in the areas of environment health, heavy metal and solvent toxicology, cancer and cardiovascular epidemiology, health service research and HIV/STD control. It has good laboratory facilities to support Analytical Chemistry and Tissue Culture. COFM is one of the 17 departments in the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Singapore.
